Although Filipino in background, successful secondary music instructor and Band Director Mark Calima is a dedicated Houston boy, having chosen to make take his music education at the University of Houston and work his career at Houston area schools.
Mark Calima has demonstrated his deft instructional touch with diverse students from widely divergent backgrounds through the universal medium of music. His plethora of awards, citations and plaudits attest to a deep insight and understanding in connecting the medium to the message of instruction.
Mark Calima of Houston, Texas in the United States has lived a full and complex life of competition and achievement since earning his Master of Music Education degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music in 2004.
Mark Calima has built an award-winning background in Marching Band performance which reads like a catalog: consistent Sweepstakes wins at UIL Concert and Sight Reading, Best in Class at each music festival competition attempted, a myriad of All State Musical Students successfully launched, an international recognition through his students’ chamber group presence at the 2013 and 2015 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.
Mark Calima’s musical teaching has been lauded on the national stage as a Finalist Band at the 2013 Bands of America Grand Nationals, through the TMEA Region 26 Honor Band Title for 2014, and his recognition in 2009 as a Who’s Who Among American Teachers and his Cedar Ridge High School naming as Teacher of the Year for 2012.
